Cambodia is recovering from its troubled past, and tourism is fueling its recovery. Country hosts some of the great attractions, most obvious Angkor is one, tropical beaches, remains of colonial period and many other.
1. Angkor Wat
Image of Cambodia for tourists is Angkor Wat, a magnificent structure built by King Suryavarman II in 12th century. Temple is considered among the finest monuments in the world. A reservoir surrounds the structure with series of rectangular terraces and 213 feet high tower. Experience at temples is extremely divine and unforgettable.
2. Bayon Temple
It is part of Angkor attractions, which features 200 stone faces facing in almost all directions. Most face of them is a portrait of King Jayavarman VII, also believed to be combination of him and Lord Buddha. This site was created as an extension plan of Angkor Thom, a capital during 12th century.
3. Banteay Srei Banteay
Srei lies 15 miles northeast of the Angkor temples. Temple was built in 9th century by king Rajendravarman's counsellor, Yajnyavahara. Temple is carved out of red sandstone with amazing decorative wall carvings. All the carvings are in perfect condition which fascinates tourists.
4. Koh Ker
Ancient capital of Khmer empire but remained capital only for short period from 928 to 944 AD. Unbelievably, during the same short period amazing architecture was created. Site includes Prasat Thom (a tall temple), ad Garuda (mythical crossbreed of man and bird). Temple remained a remote destination until a new road was constructed for tourism.
Cambodia is not all about temples; it offers tourist great sites full of wildlife. Kratie, a small town along Mekong River, was once French colony but today nature enthusiasts and backpackers come during peak season for Irrawaddy dolphins. This dolphin species are endangered found only in Mekong River.
6. Bokor Hill Station
During French rule, this hill station was famous retreat destination but was abandoned twice in war times. Today, emptiness of the town gives you chills. Further, in 2008, roads to Bokor were closed for construction but tourists can join the regular hiking tours.
7. Silver Pagoda
The jewel of Cambodia, Silver pagoda is located at Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. Buddha statues made out of gold and jewels are major attraction. A baccarat crystal Buddha and gold Maitreya Buddha with 9584 diamonds is popular among tourists. In addition, inner walls features detailed mural of Ramayana myth.
8. Tonle Sap
It is one of the unique towns in the world. However, it is a freshwater lake, it is home to many Vietnamese inhabitants living in floating villages. In dry season lake drains into Mekong River but again June heavy rains brings water back to the village. Visit the floating villages to experience unique life.
9. Kompong Som
Port city offer beautiful white sand beaches to tourists. It also has the beach resort on the gulf of Thailand. Resort offer great area to relax and spend some leisure time with your loved ones.
10. Preah Vihear
Another Khmer temple located in Dangrek Mountains is spectacular setting for tourists. Temple was constructed in 11th and 12th century during rule of Suryavarman I and Suryavarman II. Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva.
